Gar-field High School was truly an example of the nation's melting pot! As a 2019 graduate I had the amazing opportunity to receive a high quality education from a diverse staff from multiple education levels and experiences. Students ranges in all religions, races, cultures , sexual orientations and backgrounds. My real life experience at Gar-Field has truly provided me with the tools needed to matriculate through Virginia Commonwealth University. This high school has taught me about empathy, respect for differences, advocacy and high academic achievement through their International Baccalaureate Programme.

My overall experience with Gar-field High school is good, what I love about the school is that it provides dual enrollment to the nearby community college in the area and has plenty of assistance to low income or 1st generation students who want to attend college. Moreover it offers the international baccalaureate program which for many is a way to further their education especially for specific careers and if they choose to study abroad. The problem is that the school is lacking in funds, there is a noticeable priority for schools that have higher property value than the school I go to. A lot of equipment teachers buy come from out of pocket themselves, a lot of sports equipment is years old, perhaps a decade. Furthermore, the school is very old, there is only one classroom that provides windows, the rest have no windows at all, which many have complained about. Overall, the school has great potential, but it lacks some assistance to make it better for kids.
Gar-Field High is a very controversial school when it comes to its academics and overall performance. Some might say it is a very great school and others might think otherwise, but here is what I think; To be completely honest, GFHS is a school that takes their academics serious. Sometimes, I think a little too serious. For example, there is a rule when retaking assignments that the highest grade you may receive is 87%. Although I understand the reasoning behind this, I think it’s a tad extreme. They should also address major conflicts like fighting. We have many brutal and unnecessary fights that put other students and staff in danger. The school needs to do a better job in advocating that less violence and also do a better job with controlling these altercations. Besides that, Gar-Field is a good school for learning great life lessons both for staff and students.
