So far so good, first week of school was overwhelming because I am a first time mom and my little one started kindergarten . I myself have never attended a charter school so I didn’t know what to expect. My baby’s teacher Mrs. Jones is really sweet and attentive to both the parents and children. My only compliant is that for a new parent the new student orientation and the orientation that we had the day before school was overwhelming and a little chaotic . I didn’t know where to start and people where all over the place. I would suggest for a incoming parent to visit the school and talk to the staff before those days for any questions or concerns. However I am more than confident I made the right choice for my child . I also love how diverse the staff and students are and I don’t know about any other teacher but Mrs. Jones loves what she does and it shows that means the world to me.
My son has been a FAST student for four years now. While there have been some downs, there have been WAY more ups. The staff have been great with communication and very interested in my child's development. The leadership at the principle and assistant principle level is excellent. I see lots of patience and encouragement and commitment at making the school better each year. It's a very culturally diverse school, and we like that. It has made for a more interesting learning environment and helps teach things beyond school work. I like the social and emotional learning classes they have implemented. They are teaching empathy and emotional control and even things like how to start and keep a conversation going with a stranger. These are fabulous life skills that will take them even further than just book smarts.
We switched from our zoned school to FAST when it originally opened 6 years ago. The main reason we were interested is because they look at the whole student.
You can be on level or behind in one subject and not be penalized and kept out of higher level work in another one.
They started doing social-emotional learning long before it was the “it” thing to do.
And design thinking prepares you for the real world. The real world isn’t a bunch of standardize tests. It’s critical thinking and finding solutions.
I’m so glad for this school, it makes my heart happy. And my children have done very well there.
