Freedom has recently changed its reading curriculum for all grades. Whole-class, teacher-led reading of literature has been eliminated. Instead of reading novels and discussing as a class, as is the normal practice in middle schools across the country, they are now only allowed to read "passages" and answer questions about the passages. It is all an effort to raise Ga Milestones test scores. Imagine...3 whole years without reading a single book. It's absurd.
Teachers do a good job of challenging the students in the higher level classes, however the basic level classes and electives seem very easy with little to no homework. Teachers do a great job of making themselves available for extra help if needed. Like many Cherokee County Middle Schools, sports teams are lacking. There are no sports fields at the school, so teams are limited to basketball (indoor) or other club sports not affiliated with the school. There is a lot of parental involvement with PTSA and volunteering.
All typical middle schools have their cliques and I feel like that is the only major downside of this school. It is very straightforward with who fits in and who doesn't. Alot of the kids who attend here come from very well off families and a lot of it I feel gets to their head. Most of the teachers are actually great at what they do, but they treat the students as if they're babies. I feel like the administration, faculty, and teachers should allow the students to take on more responsibility and freedom. Other than that, the extra curricular, sports, music/orchestra, core classes and every other class in between are very thorough and have great people teaching them. The cafeteria and library are also very nice. The cafeteria is huge and the library is very organized and the media specialist are very helpful and there are tons of computers to do research on. Overall this school in my opinion is a top middle school.
