LaGuardia High School seems to be an amazing idea, 2700 students full of passion in one building on the Upper West Side where they can learn to perform to the best of their abilities. In reality, it's quite chaotic. So many kids jammed into one building, competing with one another every day. The competitiveness is off the charts, many of the kids will do anything to be on top, and it becomes difficult to succeed, or get into shows because there are definitely favorites. Other than the cattiness, LaGuardia is a great school. I've found it easy to find a good group of friends, and you'll meet new people at every turn since there are so many students! We have lovely traditions like LaGmas, the day before the winter holiday break the Gospel choir and Show chorus will go around the school in and out of classrooms, and sing songs, and dance. The school is massive but has such a tight sense of community.

I have a few favorite teachers I will never forget and friends that I am going to keep in contact with during college. I am glad I went to this school, because I feel they helped me prepare for college in the best way. By supporting me and my major (art) I am able to have more experience than others going into my foundation year of college. My guidance counselor is almost a second home now that it's my senior year, haha!

LaGuardia does not slack off on their academics, however some teachers that have received tenure may need to be reviewed. I would like students to be listened to more often when complaints are made. Respect from staff is common but not the norm. I feel that the higher ups should be more lenient about mental health excused absences as well as protests made by a large amount of students.

Other than that, I am honestly sad to be leaving this place. It's been a wonderful time and I will cherish the memories I've made here!
I was an instrumental major at LaGuardia and graduated in 2016. I also took some art classes at the school. I absolutely loved it there! I learned more in those for years at LaGuardia than I had ever learned. I was surrounded by peers who had the same goals and interests as I did, which motivated me to improve with my art (weather it be music or visual arts). LaGuardia really prepared me for college because the work load was high; every student had to juggle a rigorous academic program along with their "major" program--concerts, rehearsals, art shows, and many other responsibilities. Because of the Advanced Placement courses available, I entered college with twenty credits.
In short, LaGuardia is still a great school to go to, especially if a student is focused and truly has a passion for the arts.
