I am an art major. Although I have my problems with LaGuardia, I could not imagine myself anywhere else. Yes, the hours are long, but we also have up to FOUR art classes PER DAY. Sometimes the teachers assign "boring" projects, or do not offer enough critisism. Regardless, we are still practicing art every day, and therefore improving. The academics are strong here, and students don't seem to have a hard time getting into competitive schools out of LaGuardia. There is a mental health crisis because LaGuardia does not provide a lot of systems to combat anxiety and depression. The student body is working on that, and there is a new principal who will hopefully help improve LaGuardia in that regard. There aren't really cliques, as everyone just hangs out with each other. I have a ton of different friend groups. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the sgo lag instagram page!

LaGuardia High School seems to be an amazing idea, 2700 students full of passion in one building on the Upper West Side where they can learn to perform to the best of their abilities. In reality, it's quite chaotic. So many kids jammed into one building, competing with one another every day. The competitiveness is off the charts, many of the kids will do anything to be on top, and it becomes difficult to succeed, or get into shows because there are definitely favorites. Other than the cattiness, LaGuardia is a great school. I've found it easy to find a good group of friends, and you'll meet new people at every turn since there are so many students! We have lovely traditions like LaGmas, the day before the winter holiday break the Gospel choir and Show chorus will go around the school in and out of classrooms, and sing songs, and dance. The school is massive but has such a tight sense of community.
I have a few favorite teachers I will never forget and friends that I am going to keep in contact with during college. I am glad I went to this school, because I feel they helped me prepare for college in the best way. By supporting me and my major (art) I am able to have more experience than others going into my foundation year of college. My guidance counselor is almost a second home now that it's my senior year, haha!

LaGuardia does not slack off on their academics, however some teachers that have received tenure may need to be reviewed. I would like students to be listened to more often when complaints are made. Respect from staff is common but not the norm. I feel that the higher ups should be more lenient about mental health excused absences as well as protests made by a large amount of students.

Other than that, I am honestly sad to be leaving this place. It's been a wonderful time and I will cherish the memories I've made here!
