I fell in love with McBride the moment I stepped onto campus. It is small, with a population of about 800 students, and is only ten years old. McBride has a unique design. Staff members have said it is very different from the other schools they have seen. The students are cordial, and the teachers are great. It is very diverse. Every student is in one "pathway". The pathways are Health and Medical, Criminal Justice, and Engineering. Each pathway has classes tailored to them. Last year I took Health and Career Exploration. This year I am taking Medical Terminology. McBride urges students to take multiple AP classes. I have only seen bullying between friend groups, and even then, it's more of a joke. Students can start any club as long as it is approved by a teacher. Clubs and pathways offer scholarships, official training, etc. Sports aren't a big thing at our school and are technically clubs. Also, the only world language offered is Spanish.
This school has given each student a plethora of different academic opportunities. With the tight-knit community of the school and the encouraging staff, every student has the chance of succeeding and excelling in their courses. Success is not a foreign word at this school; I, as well as many other students, have been able to grow individually on a social and emotional level as well as academically, challenging myself and actively yearning for more knowledge and more growth. I have felt that I could do whatever I set my mind to. I've challenged myself since day 1 and have found that this school has always helped me to reach the top of my goals. The administration always has the students' best interest at heart and will work tirelessly to give as many academic and sociological advantages to the students. I have never been so comfortable, welcome, and safe in a school community and environment as I have at McBride.
What I love about my experience going to McBride High School is the environment I constantly surround myself with as a teenager. Compared to the public high schools in the Long Beach Unified School District, McBride High School proves its students to have a goal in their future that corresponds to STEM majors. Every day, I get to associate with students who focus on school and prioritize themselves first rather than students from other high schools that waste their teenage years smoking, drinking, and getting into trouble. At McBride, I feel like I have entered the first step of my journey into the Medical Field by taking classes based on medicine and having the opportunity to talk with peers who are interested in the same thing. Every day, I feel like I am getting somewhere.
