Elgin High School Reviews
Rating 3.78 out of 5 149 reviews
My four years at Elgin High School will live with me forever. When I moved to Elgin in 8th grade, I was warmly welcomed. I've made many friends over the years. The teachers are really nice and helpful. All they want for you is to succeed. With Elgin being a small town, it's like everyone is family. You can always ask a friend or teacher if you need help with anything. The facilities are very nice and well-kept. I'd want my kid to go here if I were a parent.
Elgin High School is probably the most average experience any high schooler could have. The academics, teachers, administration, sports, resources, parent involvement, and even food are just not anything particularly special. The sports teams have seen improvement over recent time, except the football team, they just get worse. Being in a small town, the diversity, college readiness, and STEM could use some improvement. There is a large military population, so there is something going for it. That being said, it is a relatively safe environment for students and teachers alike. The aspects I have noticed being recognized are the arts and music programs, as well as the other clubs. The facilities are actually pretty good, they are just not used to their full potential. All of this together makes for a very ordinary experience. Similar to what I said about the facilities, the school has the potential to be much more, but for whatever reason, the school just wants to remain the way it is.
Elgin Public Schools prides itself on being the best in the area; however, since graduating I have realized that this is simply false. As long as you are an pper-middle class white student, you will be treated fine. If you are a minority, such as black, Hispanic, or even queer, you will be treated far less gracefully. The academics are fine, the extracurriculars are wonderful, but the overall student experience is nothing short of anxiety-inducing. Students shout homophobic slurs in the halls and are not condemned. Teachers target students of color because they are "problem children". Bullying and fights happen regularly. This is not a safe space for students.
