As I’m currently a senior at Reed High School it has been an experience, I have learned so much and enjoyed my time there so far. Some classes I enjoyed the most is my Psychology class and my Biomedical class, it has made me so much more interested in being in the medical field and I’m so grateful to be able to experience these classes. Some things I would change about Reed High School is showcasing what classes specifically help with certain work fields, more specifically with the Enterprise Project classes and exposing more middle schoolers heading into their freshman year. When I ask people if they knew about what classes were available and if they knew what programs are at our school they had no idea, but now it’s too late for them to be able to join. I also wish that teachers put more effort into teaching, after the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a shift in students effort and teachers efforts as well, I wish they would consider the types of learning styles that best helps us.
One thing Reed needs to improve on is student mental health resources. Having counselors who spend their full time creating class schedules and who sometimes have "therapy" appointments is not enough. We need dedicated mental health professionals who do not also have to make student schedules. I believe this is a contributing factor to the behavior problems that have caused admin to create some absurd policies. These behavior problems are also the reason I rated the safety as poor. Nothing as intense as firearms on campus (as far as I know) but there have been multiple fires and police visits to Reed in just one school year. On a more positive note, many of the teachers at Reed clearly care about their students and put time into helping them succeed.
What I enjoyed the most were all the teacher who truly helped me progress! I felt like, for the most part, they cared about my education. Now I cannot generalize every person but I do feel that they have good intentions in their hearts. They want to see us grow as people and help us become better citizens. I’m proud to have gone to Reed High School and share so many great experiences there. It started to feel like a second home to me. But like all schools there are flaws and not everyone is perfect. But the overall experience was a good time!
