I have been a student at the Education Laboratory school for three school years. The school is a small, tight-knit, diverse community and allows us to grow academically and socially with each other. Our main focus is to test new curriculum for the state of Hawaii. Since the school is so small, with around 55 per grade, we are able to connect with students, administration and teachers on a more personal level. Mandatory College & Career classes are put into our schedules from freshman year, giving us early guidance for college. Due to the class sizes, we are provided the opportunities to be involved in various sports and club activities. We connect with the Hawaiian culture by learning about the relationship between the land, health and culture. Since we are located on a college campus, I wish we integrated more college level classes within our curriculum. We currently are not provided with AP courses.

The Education Laboratory School is overall a really good school if you are willing to experience a not so "traditional" education. The classes averages about 50 students, which provides a closer relationship between teacher and student considering that one class averages around 25 kids. Diversity is one of the strongest aspect about this school, and because of it, students get to experience a really special learning environment. The schools curriculum offers rigorous courses that challenges students to push their limits and strive for the highest. However, students do not get to choose most of their classes. The only classes that students themselves can choose, are electives, art, music, and after school electives. Although compared to other public schools, the Education Laboratory School does not offer as much academic opportunities, it does offer a community that creates close relationships.
I love the Lab School! Because of its small class size and teacher/student ratio, there is an amazing family feeling. Students are connected to each other and faculty. Daily classes in music, art, phys. ed and foreign language make students well rounded and creative. Collaborative learning, design thinking and team building lend themselves to an environment were students feel nurtured, empowered and unafraid to make mistakes.
