My experience at Early College High School has been overall very good. I am currently a junior at this school and I have been here since freshman year. The academics here are great and they are a little more rigorous than most other high schools, to prepare you for going to college by junior year. I definitely appreciate and love the fact that this school can give you a total of two free years of college starting your junior year. I appreciate the required AVID class as our home room class because it gives us time to do college prep with a teacher in the room who can help us at any time. We take time to research colleges, write college essays, submit applications, and any other prep to do before college starts the next year. Over all this school is very much worth it and fun, but the only down side is the minimal amount of clubs and electives since it is a small school. It also does not have any sports teams.
Overall, this is a great school for academics. You have to be willing to give up a lot of extracurricular-type activities if you want to go here. Small class sizes make it easy to form connections with teachers. They also mean you know everyone in your grade - both a good and bad thing. You'll spend half of your school career at Chemeketa, which is an average college. The campus isn't anything to write home about, and I've had some classes that were complete jokes, but at the end of the day it was a good education. Teachers can be a little overbearing about the AVID-type stuff. I suppose the kids are so well-behaved they need something to get onto them about. Not many students get into prestigious universities, so don't go here if you want it to get you into an Ivy or something. Good for state and local university prep. You'll spend most of your time with the same 5 people in your friend group, so a good school for introverts. First 2 years are intense, second 2 are better.
When I went to Early College I enjoyed the small class sizes and the closer connections I made with students and teachers because of it. I also enjoyed getting to experience college classes and getting a head start on an associate's degree with the support of my high school teachers. I also liked the wide range of people I got to meet and work with like older college students and teen moms. It allowed me to see different perspectives and opinions. The only negative experience at Early College I had was a lack of action against bullying. Bullying was a rare occurrence but one I think could have been better addressed.
