From Dunn School

Our community (6-12, boarding and day) is teeming with bright, curious, multi-faceted young people who are finding their way in the world and seeking to develop their strengths for the college and beyond. We believe that taking risks and stretching comfort zones is the essence of real growth. We believe that experiential education and a leadership curriculum are essential parts of the learning process and we aim to nurture the whole student with a commitment to our core values. Our students thrive in the classroom and outside of it, and on any given week you'll find Dunn students out in the field-- from the High Sierras to the Colorado River, from coastal conservation centers to the green fields on campus. We encourage you to come see for yourself. You'll be inspired by our incredibly welcoming students and teachers, and you'll be surprised at the serene campus you'll find behind our gates.

There are very few positive elements to this school. The college guidance counselor and a few teachers have the students best interest at heart. But parents should understand that this school is nothing like other top tier boarding schools that charge the same in tuition.

Day students and families stick to themselves, it is cliquey. Vaping, drinking and drugs occur on weekends. Teachers and dorm parents are barely present after hours so do not think your child will have supervision or guidance. Activities and sports, facilities, course work options are extremely limited.

If a child makes a mistake, they will keep the tuition. During Covid there were zero refunds of room/board. Consistent, quality instruction was non-existent.

Probation/rules/consequences are hit or miss depending on parental involvement, money given or if on the board. There are better places that make real connections and deliver what makes the boarding experience impactful for a lifetime.

Our son landed at Dunn Middle School in 7th grade. He knew no one and was shy and fearful of large group situations you find in public school. We watched him "find his fit" over the last year and transform into a confident, engaged learner and leader who truly respects and likes his teachers - all of them. The faculty are incredibly supportive of each student and meet them where they are, playing to strengths and quietly establishing strong relationships with the kids to be able to coax them into improving their weaker sides and try new things. I sat through two parent teacher student conferences and was blown away by the thoughtful and insightful self assessments my son put together on his own, and read aloud to us all in the meeting. Can't say enough good things about Dunn Middle School. FWIW it's worth the 40 minute drive from Santa Barbara.
I've been at Dunn for my seventh year now, so I definitely know a lot of about this school. I can say that without Dunn I wouldn't be the person I am today and I am so thankful for that. This school has pushed me out of my comfort zone with their outdoor education, and has introduced me to the most amazing teachers and people I will ever meet. Through Dunn I have discovered what I want to pursue in college and do in life. I fell in love with photography in middle school when I took an enrichment class at the high school and learned about the dark room and how to develop our very own photos. Even though when I got to the high school there was no longer the dark room and a different teacher ,I carried on in photography classes throughout my time at Dunn. Now I am applying to go to art school. By no means is Dunn perfect like every school they have their flaws, but I guarantee this school will make you grow to become a young adult in the best way.
