I enjoyed my years at DuBois Area Catholic School. My school has small class sizes and I was able to get individual help when I needed it. I was able to participate in sports, clubs, and musical productions. I have close friendships with my classmates and had an overall good experience. One thing that I would like to see improve is the math department. I felt like direct instruction was limited in the upper level math courses. I often felt like I had to teach myself the material in order to do well in the class.
Obviously, since DCC is a private school, it is bound to be a lot safer than a lot of the other public schools in the area, which is definitely a notable benefit. However, I feel that the main drawback of the school is its administration's overall incompetency and the school's inability to hire good quality, stable teachers, particularly in the math and science department. I can honestly say, having gone to the school my entire life, that I have had only three high-quality math and science teachers since I entered middle school. Additionally, there is obvious discrimination between boys and girls schools at the school. As a member of the varsity girls basketball team at DCC, I have seen firsthand the discrepancies in funding, equipment, advertising, etc. between the boys and girls programs not only in basketball but in every sport that features both genders. Unless a girls' coach has significant personal funds, you will be hard pressed to get the necessary funding from the school.
This parochial school definitely has its pros and cons. On the plus side, the teachers are engaged and caring and the academics are excellent. Class sizes are small and the subject matter is interesting. On the down side, the curriculum is very limited. Artistic classes are few and far between, there is little to no music education and once you reach the high school level, the theology component shifts to almost exclusively "pro-life" concerns instead of actual theology.
