The teachers at Dsst: Byers High School become close friends/family. I love that my teachers cared for each and one of my classmates, and took the time to know us personally. This type of relationship is great, since it makes it easier to ask for help and better advocate for yourself. To add on, there are many options for classes to take in order for each student to be challenged at a reasonable level. There are many activities and extracurriculars to join, and even opportunities to start your own club! Here at Byers inclusivity and respect are highly encouraged, there are many affinity/cultural clubs open to the whole student body. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Dsst: Byers High School, and it definitely set the bar high when looking for colleges to apply to.
I have gone to byers since 6th grade and if you are a minority of any kind this will not be a supportive school for you socially or mentally and your academics will either be ignored or the staff will be on you about it constantly. The rigor is great and there are some teachers who actually care and want you to succeed and will help you get to where you need to be but there are a lot of teachers who just go through the motions and don't actually care. There is no mental health support they just want you to become a machine. It truly is a STEM school even though they say they care about the arts there is nothing showing that support except an art class that the staff has given up on. The sports program is very poor. The school refuses to acknowledge their racism and bias and where they have failed, but expect the minority students to acknowledge their failings constantly. Negative treatment of LGBTQ+ students has not been addressed by staff even with students requesting them to.
DSST Byers High School has equipped me with wonderful academic resources and support. However, there were many strict and somewhat unnecessary policies put in place that really inhibited students' social wellbeing at school. Additionally, I would have liked to see more engagement and investment in our extracurricular programs. Overall, I appreciate the challenging academic environment at but there is definitely room to improve the social engagement and extracurricular programs and at DSST Byers.
