Love how DV prepares you for the rigor of college! It can be very challenging and competitive at times, however. Dougherty has some amazing teachers who are willing to help you not only with academics but also help you understand your future plans. Being involved in activities on campus from clubs, sports, and organizations will provide a meaningful and enriching experience.
Overall my experience at DVHS was positive. Most of the teachers are fantastic, especially in the english and social studies departments. While there was fun activities/sports/programs to get involved in, I did feel there was an overall lack of school spirit/culture amongst the student body. My largest beef with this school is that (because all of the students are very bright and high achieving) the attitude amongst the students and teachers is 4 year top tier college or nothing. I wish they poured more resources into tutoring programs for. Teachers know the kids are advanced and studious and sometimes fail to recognize the students who are struggling. While they do have great programs for students with learning disabilities, I wish there had been more an emphasis on “middle tier” students for lack of better terms. Additionally, I wish they discussed trade schools more for non 4 year college track students, as well and help eliminate the negative connotation around state school.
DVHS is infamous for its competitive nature in the academics. STEM is highly prioritized as many aim to follow their parents into computer science or medical school. It’s common knowledge that students here score higher than the national average on most AP exams. However, the arts program is also well-funded- plenty of resources for visual artists and events for performers. The school spirit in DV is alive due to plenty of school-funded leadership events, despite the average sports plays. The majority of students are Asian- Chinese and Indian- with a small minority of Caucasian and Black students. A wellness center is also an available resource for regular mental health counseling, and a college & career center offers college visits and internship opportunities. Nevertheless, the average student struggles with stress from a tough workload and an inferiority complex. Definitely a stigma involved with college/after-grad decisions- everyone wants to make it to the top colleges.
