Dougherty Valley High School is a wonderful school both academically and socially. The student body is passionate about school spirit and the teachers are invested in school events as well. Students are kind enough and welcoming to people from all different identities and beliefs. Teachers are present and engaged with lessons and offer help with any student struggling. The only criticism is the elitist air that surrounds the kids taking honors and AP classes. Oftentimes it feels like normal students taking regular classes are looked down upon by those taking more advanced classes. While yes the material may be more advanced, it does not necessarily mean that they are above or better than others.

It's an extremely competitive environment which can make it tough at times but there are a broad range of classes offered, great teachers and counselors who are very supportive, lots of opportunities offered, tons of clubs, and an overall really great school spirit. Students are connected, kind, and helpful and there's something for everybody. Our social scene is pretty good too with really hyped up rallies, sports events, and other school collaborations. Faculty is really kind and pretty lenient with things such as dress code and students have an overall enjoyable high school experience.
My experience at Dougherty Valley was not the greatest, but it was memorable. The academic environment is very rigorous and challenging, which can be both a negative and a positive depending on the person. The students are generally extremely competitive; at times, I felt very alienated and detached from my peers, who seemed to focus only on test scores and GPA. However, I see Dougherty as a critical step in my life, and I'm certain it prepared me well for college. Although the social atmosphere was disheartening, I had a great time as a wildcat!
