My experience at DCL STEM Academy has been great. I received amazing opportunities such as participating in the BD debate challenge about whether genetic editing on human embryos should be permitted. Furthermore, I was surrounded by like minded students who have are passionate about STEM. I had the ability to do many hands on activities that led me to experience one on one what its like to be in the medical field. For example, I have diseccted a sheep's brain, watched a live kidney transplant, and heard lectures from college students and medical professionals. The teachers at STEM always push their students to do their best and the school has great resources if you are ever struggling in a subject. Overall, I'm very grateful to be a student at DCL STEM because it allows to be surrounded by high achieving students, great resources to prepare me for college, and sets higher standards for students every year to make themselves reach their fullest potential.
The experience of going here is just overall not fun. From the terrible administration making poor decisions, to the rigorous coursework, this school needs improvement. While there are some things to look forward to, such as the friends you will make, they are overpowered by the teachers that treat you like college students, the horrid student lunches, the lack of attention to student needs, and much more. The one thing this school does do properly however, is prepare you for college. With the 10 different classes you take per year, you will graduate with a SURPLUS of credits, learn a large (almost excessive) quantity of lessons, etc. But overall, preparing you for college does not compare to the negatives of this school.
Diana C. Lobosco STEM Academy is a technical vocational school that offers studies in engineering, computer science, and biomedical. The interior design of this school is beautiful as well as fully equipped with the equipment needed for a successful education. I love the culture and acceptance that this school offers. I'm saying this as a student attending. Not many students can say that they had a bully-free environment to grow in. All the students are working as teams to solve daily challenges in their designated shops. The students are constantly being challenged by the teachers to find areas for improvement. Although this school has many good traits just as anything else there is room for improvement. I would like to improve the final exam policy. As a constant student-traveler I've faced issues when trying to complete exams which are worth 10% of your final grade. Maybe students can be able to reschedule the exams for earlier dates so that their year round efforts pay off.
