Really great school overall! Only negative thing about it is the academic pressure. We have a ton of great programs that allow you to study what you're interested in, but there's some stigma around AP courses and it's easy to feel left out or not smart enough if you're not taking a ton of APs. Academics are rigorous and fast-paced, but it makes it super easy to get all of the required graduation credits and have time for fun electives as well.
There is little doubt that Del Norte is academically rigorous. Most students take at least one AP, and the vast majority of students who take the AP exam pass with fours and fives. However, the 5-class-per-tri trimester schedule often forces them to choose between taking year-long AP classes and non-college-prep electives that they would enjoy more. Furthermore, the academic rigor of the school infuses the school environment with high levels of competitiveness; students compete for the best grades, the best SAT scores, the best summer internships, and even for who got the least sleep, as though working to the point of exhaustion is a badge of honor. Within a culture where intelligence has become synonymous with excellence in science and math, the arts and humanities are seriously undervalued, and people with talent in the arts-- such as poetry, ceramics, singing, and dance-- are often dismissed. While undoubtedly DNHS has prepared me for college, I often ask myself: at what cost?
My experience at Del Norte High School has been extremely positive. Del Norte is known as being a prestigious and impressive public high school, and it has lived up to its standards in every way. Having attended Del Norte for three full years, I have been supported in each and every way whether it be in class or in sports. Del Norte has world-class teachers that are always willing to put in the extra time and effort to ensure the success of their students. In addition to academics, Del Norte also has impressive sports organizations. Having tried two different sports on campus, I can confirm that the quality and organizational skills of sports programs at Del Norte are top-notch as coaches are accepting, prepared, and excited about their jobs. Del Norte also has an amazing office staff as counselors are always prepared to meet with you and help you on your journey into college. All and all, Del Norte is an amazing school that has lived up to its impressive standards.
