Deerfield certainly prepared me for success in my later life, and I built some amazing connections. The challenging academics and competitive environment helped me to grow and adapt a lot throughout my years there.
Unfortunately, as a lower-income and LGBTQ student I experienced a lot of classism, elitism, and blatant transphobia. While Deerfield claims to be diverse or progressive, most students and faculty were ignorant to their own privilege. I did not feel as though I was supported as much as my straight and cisgender classmates and I did not feel like I could ask for support or compassion on those issues. Even worse, I saw my peers of color experience a huge amount of discrimination and racism. Despite hard work from the student alliances the administration never actually addressed the racism fully or made meaningful change.
There is a lot to be gained from a Deerfield education, but at the expense of feeling safe or comfortable if you are not a wealthy cisgender white student.

Amazing teachers, school spirit, facilities, space, and opportunities. The campus is so green and lovely and the teachers care so much about the health of students in and outside of class. Facilities are constantly improving. The food is amazing and diverse. However, the student body can seem to self segregate and the minority groups(in ethnicity, religion, sexuality and gender, etc) tend to be small however accepted by the community. There is most definitely a wealthy culture to Deerfield, but it is not the mainstream community and it does not impose itself on the student body as a whole. School games and school meetings are full of spirit and pride. The community is generally kind and the academics are challenging.
I've had a great experience with Deerfield Academy because of the tight-knit community, and the sit-down meal style as well as the beautiful campus and academic rigor. The school has tons of resources for its motivated and ambitious student body, and the teachers genuinely care about the subject they teach.

What makes Deerfield stand out is its long-standing sit-down tradition, where randomly selected groups of 6-7 students are assigned to sit at a table and eat lunch together daily with 1 adult present. Our sit-down tradition has helped me meet tons of likable students, who I would not have otherwise met.
