I believe that this school was thoroughly beneficial in terms of exposure to advanced content, and learning how to navigate through difficult circumstances. However, being here can be very overwhelming, and it is very easy to be caught up in academic achievement that self neglect becomes a major factor. My advice to future students is to really deliberate if the Health Sciences is something you are truly passionate about. If so, enter this school prepared for the complexities that are to come with this fast paced, college-preparatory environment. Complete your work as soon as you receive it, or as soon as reasonably possible, and most importantly, build and maintain your relationships with your peers, administrators, and educators. Join clubs, get involved in student politics, if interested, and work diligently to receive your DeBakey diploma :).
DeBakey High School has a very rigorous curriculum. The overall experience will without doubt provide the skill set needed for the future and opportunities that further your connection in the healthcare field. I can’t help but say the school is very academically beneficial if a student makes it through the full 4 years. However, the strain it has on a persons mental and emotional state should not be taken lightly. No matter the level of productivity or how motivated a student may be, there will always be an excessive amount of work to be done. Meaning completing one task has little to no reward after seeing the amount of homework or studying that still needs doing. Throughout the year it is very rare for a student to complete absolutely all homework at any point, there’s always something that needs to be done which can put immense pressure on anyone. However, this process completely prepares the students for college as mentioned by every out of the numerous alumni I’ve met.
I am currently a sophomore heading into my junior year at DeBakey H.S for Health Prof. While it is ranked as a top tier school it is actually not all that great. The student morale here is terrible and some of the staff are very rude. We also have a racist narcist as the 9th and 10th grade AP whom I've had multiple negative encounters with. While this school may prepare your scholar for college academically, it surely will be the worst four years of their life. I can definitely say that this school is not for the weak and wish the upcoming freshmen good luck!
