De Portola was a good school, but starting at 9 in the morning and ending at 4 was not good. The teachers were good, while the staff was okay. Student clubs exist, but aren’t prominent, and sports don’t really exist outside of PE. Little to no college readiness.

My friends were nice, and the clubs were interesting. I really loved the Washington DC trip option, which sadly became optional. Unfortunately, the administration really seems to enjoy restricting and banning every traditional student activity they can , like the 8th grade pool party, due to their irrational phobia of liability claims and lawsuits-is it really fair to have the current and future student's enjoyment ruthlessly squashed due to the actions of one helicopter parent and their whiny, weak-willed child?
Out of three years of attendance, I had four truly outstanding teachers. Two of those teachers were English teachers, and the other two were math teachers. The rest of the teachers were simply average, but the science teachers were truly sub par. One of my science teachers was notable for love of dull worksheets on golden tree frog biology (JUST golden tree frog biology) and the other teacher was less of a teacher and more of a supervisor of what often ended up being simply a free period (the most educational thing I did in that class was watch a dubious documentary on the "truth behind the chupacabra"). Some of the teachers are exceptional, but overall the school ended up simply being average in every aspect.
