I love my experience while attending Darnell Cookman Middle High School! I loved the fact that the school prepared you for life after high school with its rigorous courses. However, they always offered tutoring to ensure you did not fail. This is a school where the teachers love to teach and the students love to learn and it’s the perfect school to get you prepared for college. Although it’s an academic forward school, there are plenty of extracurricular activities as well.
Darnell Cookman has given me the opportunity to delve into rigorous courses that could aid in my success in college. For example, students are given the opportunity to take AP courses and AP tests at no cost. Passing scores on AP tests could count as college credits, depending on the college you attend. Darnell Cookman also offers dual enrollment, meaning that students can be enrolled in high school and college at the same time. I am actually currently enrolled in the University of Florida as a dual enrollment student through my school. However, being that Darnell is such an educationally driven school, students rarely have opportunities for fun activities in school. I would like to see more fun activities at my school, like maybe more pep rallies. Darnell should offer more of a balance between education and leisure.
I attended Darnell Cookman from 6-12th grade, and it was a wonderful experience. You can tell that the teachers truly care about their students, and administration is tough when need be but overall everyone gets along very well and violence or fights were very rare. The smaller size makes it easy to know all of your class mates and create closer connections with peers and teachers. Being that this school is a medical magnet, it pushes the students to excel in many areas and gives students opportunities to go out and get real world experiences, such as the annual field trip to Medtronic. I would highly recommend this school to anyone and would not change anything if I had the chance!
