I came to WHS as a freshman after being homeschooled through middle school, and it has been a wonderful experience. Academics are strong and include many opportunities such as online classes, AP classes, and the option to take classes at UW-Whitewater as an upperclassman. This allows for even more choices than the regular courses offered at the high school. Teachers are amazing—friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable both in their subject areas and in life. In addition to other extracurricular activities, sports offer a way to learn something new. While the different sports perform well in conference, they are open to anyone interested in joining, and coaches are wonderful to work with and learn from. As a senior, I am proud of my school and thankful for my time in it, and I will miss it when I graduate!
In a lot of ways, I truly do find my home here in Whitewater. The town is small so you recognize almost any face you come across in school. For the most part, I really think that the Whitewater School district does a good job in choosing who they hire to educate myself and my peers. Many of our teachers have qualifications beyond the basics, giving the ability to stretch our learning. However, I think that it does lack in some areas. Specifically, being a Senior I have noticed that they do not really prepare you well for senior year. You are sort of thrown into it without knowing what to do or what to look for. Much of my senior year responsibilities have been ones that I have had to just figure out on my own. Of course independence is important in this stage of life, but it is still important to have a push in the right direction, rather than throwing us in directionless.
The teachers are very good at communicating with their students and families. They love helping students, many of them stay after school for 2 hours to help struggling students with their homework. I do wish, though, that they had more AP classes regarding history and sciences.
