The Westwood Regional School District was a very positive experience for me. Academically, athletically, and socially the district is very secure. Most importantly, the best part of the district is the tight knit, sense of family and community that exists. It starts from the administration and filters down into the teachers, coaches, and the entire staff. My school is filled with positive role models who encourage their students to want to work hard and do better everyday. The all around environment that exists at my high school makes it very easy to be a successful student in academics and in any extracurricular activity you participate in.
With the small class sizes and the friendly and approachable teachers, I was able to ask questions and receive additional support when needed. Although as compared to some districts we are a small H.S., for the area we are larger as we regionalize. Therefore, offerings in the electives is better than the surrounding area. I was able to take things like film making, fashion and design and forensics. I found that my interests are further reaching than I thought. Lastly, although I am a student who gets good grades, I wish that I had had better early reading instruction. I have been diagnosed with dyslexia, but it did not begin to effect my reading until early middle school. Reading continues to be a struggle which can affect my ability to learn new vocabulary and thus how well I comprehend what I am reading.
I've been very privileged at my school to not have any issues directly relating to me, but I have friends who have struggled because of the environment at school. I think that there are a lot of teachers that try their best and want students to succeed, but there are others that are just trying to get through their work day and I find that this attitude is detrimental to some students. The one thing that I will give my school credit for is attempting to be more welcoming and embracing diversity. For a long time this wasn't present in the school district and I'm very proud that the administration and staff has worked towards this.
