I like that the district is small; we are a small community and school nestled in Spokane County and just east of the city of Spokane. My mom grew up in West Valley, as did most of my friends' parents. There's a feeling of family here. Because the community is small and people either don't leave or they do leave and return, there isn't a lot of student diversity. Which leads me to the second part of the writing prompt: What would I like to see changed. I would like to see acceptance of people that are different. I want to see the community give grace to others who are different and to not pass judgement. I want to see more opportunities for our marginalized groups. I want more people to have the bravery and courage to voice dissenting opinions. I want more teachers to be hired that don't look like the "norm". I want to see LGBTQ+ staff and staff of color hired. I want marginalized groups to SEE themselves in our staff. I want to see a change in WVSD!
What I enjoy most about West Valley, is that it is full opportunities for everyone. There are countless clubs and activities for everyone, especially at WVHS, and in the rare case someone did not find anything fit for them, the administration and staff is more than willing to start something with them. There have been multiple clubs started by students in the past four years that I have attended. Including a club where once a week, students go eat lunch and play games with special needs kids. As far as academics go, WV goes above and beyond in catering to the needs of children. There are classes for everyone suited for multiple learning styles. The only complaint I would ever have is the lack of available classes compared to other high schools in the area, but that is due to lack of funding and overall size of the district population, not a direct reflection on the schools themselves.
West Valley School District, especially the high school has been a tremendous place to attend school. For a smaller district, it provides big opportunities in may areas. Highly recommended!
