Not all that glitters is gold! This school district has a very good branding strategy and reputation, however, it is all over-hyped. Beneath all the fancy marketing and new buildings are over-capacity schools and average teaching. As a parent, I feel the only time they want my involvement is when they need to raise money. Parents are actually discouraged from volunteering (pre-COVID) which makes me question what they don’t want parents to see during the day. This district includes the city of Waukee as well as the portion of West Des Moines in Dallas county. The families in the West Des Moines portion are neglected when it comes to building new schools. We pay the same taxes, but all new schools are being built in the northern and western parts of Waukee which creates very long commutes to the secondary schools. The West Des Moines portion of the district is growing just as fast, yet gets no new schools. Avoid this district. If you need to be in Waukee, live north/west not south.

Overall, Waukee’s School district is very well-rounded when it comes to valuing students’ academic needs. Given many challenging curriculums, students get the chance to challenge themselves in order to better improve their learning abilities. Students also have the chance to be involved in many after school clubs and activities, some that students have created themselves. Staff and administrators are very involved in what goes on in every Waukee school, and they make sure students are constantly in a safe learning environment. With a large variety of Waukee’s clubs, activities and sports, parents of participating students are involved in fundraising, planning, and lending a helping hand. Waukee Community School District is a very proficient system and the schools all around have been producing more graduates than I personally have seen in quite some time.
The Waukee school district is an amazing place to go. There are so many opportunities whether it is to get involved in sports, clubs, and volunteering. In high school there are so many dual credit classes that can be taken to save money for college! The teachers truly do care about you and are there as a support!
