The Watauga County School System is good. Their twitter page is active and they use social media as a means to communicate school delays and cancellations. It is very easy to obtain a background check through this school system, if you would like to volunteer, and the Superintendent is very friendly.
As a parent, I could not be happier. Our children love the K-8 environment and get to have art, PE, orchestra, and a wide range of activities. The teachers are wonderful and the other students are respectful and good kids. The new superintendent who came a few years ago has made a world of difference in our schools. I see him at lots of events with his own children.
