Being a student in the Walnut Valley Unified School District, I can say that this school achieves almost every category at the most average level. Now WVUSD does have some excellent aspects like its strive for education, its access to resources, and almost overwhelming involvement of presence has made going to school in this district a great thing. Sadly there are many things that it lacks, for example, diversity. The WVUSD has a very strong Asian American presence with them outnumbering other students 4-1. Other things include underfunded facilities and a lack of college readiness preparation.
In general, I believe that WVUSD is a generally average school district. I appreciate all of the opportunities that have been given to me, but as many districts do, WVUSD has many major flaws. Discrimination among minorities is constantly an unsolved issue. Students are heard using vulgar language against people of color, people with special needs and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Many people have held complaints and concerns about the staff at the district. Many people feel like the counselors are not trained to properly handle students with mental health issues. Another issue to the district is the academic stress that a majority of staff encourage. Me, including many others have lost countless hours of sleep to meet the expectations of teachers. I think the environment of the school can be fixed over the course of a few months, but I feel that many problems are swept under the rug and only brought to attention by students.
I entered the Walnut Valley Unified School District in sixth grade. It was my first year in public school and honestly the staff at both my middle school and high school were both very helpful and major contributions to my success as a student. However, the staff and positions at the district did not prove to be understanding towards me, as I experienced my first time being rejected which proved to be heart-wrenching. The district denied my transfer to Diamond Bar High School because I was at the time assigned to attend Walnut High School. I knew that I would succeed more under the circumstances and environment at Diamond Bar High School, however I adapted and overcame.
