Thornton Township High School granted me an average education, in my opinion. There are multiple courses available for students, however there is little room for personal choices to be made about academic paths. I took on the honors path which led to me being a full IB diploma student. Although these classes required more work to be done, I didn't gain as much from them as I thought I would. I expected to learn broader and more inclusive material while learning skills that would be helpful in preparing me for college. However, I found myself simply using skills I'd already had, and noticed students who lacked in those areas, struggling. Outside of the limited academic pathways, there are also limited resources provided to students which limits our ability to expand on our own ideas and personal interests.
High school is basically what you make it. What you put into your education is exactly what you receive in return. The resources, clubs activities and counceling are all there you just have to participate and take advantage of the opportunities. Participating in sports, student government, school spirit are all great. We went on college tour during spring break and 90 percent of the cost was paid for by the school district. Also there were many colleges and universities that visited our school as part of a college fair.
My High School experience wasn't bad at all, I just wasn't a fan of the school. My Senior year wasn't what I planned it to be, I think it was a very humbling experience. During the pandemic, I stayed home a lot. School was closed, online learning was basically my life for months. I think the school could work on the environment stand point more, I think if it was a better environment to be around it would be a better school. I was unhappy walking into there every day, I just wanted to go back home.
