My experience at Sunnyside had been great! I love the garden by the office and walking by there when I have the chance too. The teachers are helpful to everyone and keep me interested in what we are learning. One thing I’d change is the amount of shade around and add more, the weather is extremely hot here and it would be nice to be outside and feel a bit cooler.
I liked some of the staff because they did care about the kids and you can tell; a selected few weren’t as nice as they should’ve been nor were they helpful. Some teachers had favorites which impacted and changed the atmosphere in the classroom. Overall it’s not so bad depending on who you are with during your time at school. However, nobody really does anything unless parents call to get involved. You also need to look for resources and help on your own because most school counselors and other staff won’t help you. They won’t keep you updated on issues or anything important that could help you during your last four years of high school. For instance, before I switched counselors nobody had mentioned to me the programs that I could have taken in J-Ted nor did they let me know of any CTE courses I could have taken and gotten college credit for, during my time in school.
I have been a part of the Sunnyside Unified School District my entire life. The district has always been seen as a horrible district due to the fact that we are in the South-side. From an outsider's perspective, they automatically assume that sending their kid to this district is a recipe of disaster. But, that's not the case. Just because our schools are on the dangerous side of town, doesn't mean we will not be successful. I can confidently say that I am ready for college. Sunnyside High School and Desert View High School offer excellent career pathway courses that have helped me decide what I want to be in the future. At Sunnyside, the counselors are extremely helpful. They are attentive with all students and offer many resources. Not only that, our school spirit is unlike any other districts. People are proud of acknowledging they are apart of SUSD.
