Suffolk Public Schools have provided me with an education that has been beneficial. While the education standards are low, depending on which school you attend, the staff can be very kind and helpful. I attended Lakeland High School as a student in the PLTW: Biomedical Sciences program. There, I found a very strong Science Department with fully capable teachers, including trained- AP teachers. However, there are teachers at Lakeland that lack the qualifications to teach AP/Honors level courses. Many students find themselves stuck in classes with rude/obnoxious staff. However, I have only had this occur a few times and I lived. Furthermore, the programs available in Suffolk City Public Schools are very disciplined and accredited, furthering any enrolled student's education. While it's certainly not the best, it is up there in terms of diversity, teachers, STEM, and clubs/activities.
I would like to see foreign language courses taught in the lower grade levels beginning in the kindergarten grades. By the time I started taking foreign language as a teenager I could not retain the information. Also, more emphasis in involving female students in math, science & technology learning activities through workshops, classes, field trips, clubs and fun activities encouraging them to have careers in the STEM fields.
My experience at Suffolk Public Schools has had its ups and downs. Many of the teachers have helped me throughout the years and I have had excellent experiences with them. However, some students made it had to learn and focus while attending this school.
