High-school wasn’t always just about academics to me. I value so many of the memories made there, good and bad. Procrastinating homework, sleeping in class, and taking shortcuts are all lessons high school has taught me to avoid learning twice. On the other hand it has also revealed to me the benefits of community, diligence, and most importantly the importance of change. Throughout all my experiences, the dreaded test scores and the chaotic assemblies, one that stands out to me most is Showchoir. Since change is one of the most important pillars of high school, it played a big role in my newfound identity in Showchoir. It took 3 years of high school for me to realize how much I love singing and dancing for audiences while sharing stories and conveying emotions and themes that cannot be expressed in any other way than through music. I now have the confidence to leave high school with the determination to achieve my dream. My biggest wish that my peers leave with the same determination.
Since the area of St. Francis if primarily filled with whites, it is harder to find diversity within the local community. But, I am not saying this is a bad thing. The citizens in this area and in the schools are accepting, respectful, and even inspiring. I do wish that there were more cultural clubs within the school, but of course that is not the easiest thing to do. Throughout the several years I have went to the St. Francis Area Schools, I have noticed that more and more people of diverse ethnicities from the cities are moving up here. I hope future generations can make an effort to transform the schools into a more diverse and culturally-activated environment.
With two kids in the district, pre-k and elementary age, we love it here. Our Superintendent is by far the best and is making a huge impact here. We’ve only had one teacher who wasn’t amazing, but was still kind and helpful. We plan to ride it it here and see all the progress unfold over the next 13 years. It’s true we are not that diverse yet, but anyone is welcome!
