Small classes, caring teachers who go above and beyond for their students! The teachers collaborate and work as a team to individualize instruction and students with special needs do not fall between the cracks. The school culture seems very comfortable and united. So many opportunities for summer programs and clubs offered. Now they have sports.
The South Texas Independent School District is brilliant in every way possible. The district and it's staff are always finding new ways to give it's students' opportunities for academic growth/ development. Most noteworthy of STISD, are the certification programs it offers such as ophthalmology, dental assisting, medical assisting, etc. Students are taught the different skills pertaining to the program they choose within a class room setting and given the opportunity to test for their certification which can possibly lead to a associates degree. The only problem with the district is that there is no genuine student life or authentic high school experiences. This includes events such as pep rallies, sport outings, immense club options, dances, fundraisers, etc. The district truly cares about academics, as it should, but it should also learn to care for it's students' well being.
First of all, I love the fact that you can apply to be part of this district no matter where you live in the Rio Grande Valley. The school district provides bus service to students living almost two hours away! My son had the good fortune to attend the two year middle school program at STPA, and is now currently attending SciTech. Probably one of the most academically rigorous option for over achievers in the area. Kids can meet other kids who love to learn and to challenge themselves. Only drawback is the University of Texas automatic acceptance of top 7%. These kids all would have been in the top 7% at their home schools. But when you gather them all together from the region, the competition at the top is extremely fierce. Pretty mellow school culture where kids seem to respect individual differences. No such thing as bullying that I have ever heard of here. I like it, and most importantly, my child loves it.
