I am currently a senior at Tappan Zee High School and have gone through all of the South Orangetown Central School District schools. I would have to say that overall the school district is average. Majority of the teachers in the high school are tenured so they tend to not put a lot of effort into their teaching. However, I find the history department at out high school amazing. The elementary schools have average teachers. The are is very nice and it isn't an issue if you need to switch out of a class at any grade. There is a lot of school spirit at our school, especially at football and basketball games. The administration is very friendly and the retired NYPD security guards are the best!
Everyone likes to complain about their public schools, and there is always something negative you can say. Our school system, however, is responsive to the needs of our community, and provides really wonderful class options to our students. The PTA is very involved, the community feedback and communication is great. Our students prefer our schools to the neighboring school systems that some of their friends attend. We have room for improvement, but we are doing a great job of challenging our students and helping them grow.
Overall, my experience at South Orangetown Central School District has been extremely positive. It’s a place I have been able to discover and grow my interests in engineering, math and the theatre program. Even though the school is not the most diverse, the district makes inclusivity and community a main priority and take all threats extremely seriously. For the most part, all of the teachers are genuinely interested in helping you flourish and discover your passions. It’s been a great place to grow up and learn.
