I had a very rough go around in my u-46 elementary school. I suffered terrible bullying and my principal and teachers chose not to act on it on almost all accounts. My principal and teachers also made an attempt to prevent me from applying to the middle school gifted program in the district and expressed their opinions on whether I was "high school academy material" based off of the belief that I was mentally handicapped... and I am not mentally handicapped. Unfortunately, certain members of the staff at u-46 elementary schools who perhaps should not be where they are cannot be removed purely for incompetence. Despite this, I had a very supportive teacher (who wasn't even my regular teacher) during the sixth grade who helped me get into the gifted program where I flourished and was accepted into the engineering academy at my current high school. Things have only gotten better from there.

Poor board members lack the skill set or knowledge to make decisions that benefit ALL students. Instead, choices are made based on the "needs" of a few. Schools barely function with pothole filled lots, bathrooms with broken doors, faucets that spout brown water, and boast large amounts of gang/drug affiliated activity. Administration is CLEARLY biased against certain students. One teacher was a part-time party clown. Other teachers that had to share the room with him afterwards often found items misplaced or missing. The number of bus routes is greater than the number of bus drivers, so some students may wait for 50 minutes outside for a driver to finish his/her route and then return for another route.
As a senior in high school, I've gone through my entire educational path thus far through district U-46. The staff and schools themselves are quite underwhelming and although not rare, it is difficult to find administration that is somewhat understanding or caring of an individual's situation. What really makes this district stand out is the diversity of students and staff within it. I've been surrounded by completely different social classes, cultures, ideologies, and walks of life my entire schooling experience, and this is a factor that makes school district U-46 shine.
