I currently attend East Carolina University, and I love the environment of Pitt county. I think this university offers amazing staff and extra curriculars for students on campus. I think it provides a great space for us to be and get our education!
I have many different academic opportunities. One of my favorites has been Health Science Academy. Being a part of this program has given me the opportunity to explore various health fields and programs, and it has given me insight into the field of study I would like to pursue. I also like that we have many honor societies in which students can be a part of. I am in Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, NHS, Rho Kappa, National English Honor Society, and science honor society. I have also been an active member with Link Crew, which is in place to help incoming freshman learn how to navigate high school. I have had many teachers that have been an integral part of my educational experience from elementary school all the way through high school. Those teachers not only taught me valuable academic knowledge, but also life skills and knowledge on how to just be a good person. I have remained in contact with several of these teachers over the years; I will continue these lessons through life.
The Pitt County School system is very diverse, but some individual schools lack diversity. There are still school’s that are considered white schools and those that people say “That’s a Black school.” I get along with all races and used to have friends from diverse backgrounds while living in South Carolina. Since living in North Carolina for the last 2 years, I’ve noticed the lack of community with different races more in NC than in SC. As for teachers, they are competent and willing to help, but they are overwhelmed with large class sizes. My sister and I will attend private school in the fall due to the disappointment with public school. COVID-19 has changed many things with our schools, and the lack of teacher involvement is much greater than before. It now seems as if teachers prefer online since they no longer have to deal with students. I look forward to returning to a normal school environment in a smaller class setting where teachers want to help me learn.
