A lot of the teachers are there for the paycheck and don't actually teach. They'd shove a worksheet at you, play a video, and then wonder why the class is failing. The school spirit and life is high but lacks inclusivity of other programs/clubs for anyone other than "the popular kids". Administration also doesn't handle student conflict well whether it be fights or bullying, it's only shrugged off most of the time. There is also an issue when it comes to predatory staff and no one does anything even if they hear students talk about it, which they do and loudly, I feel that's an important issue to look into and provide better screening when hiring. I understand employing scarcity but hiring predators is disgusting. They should screen better when hiring to find actual good teachers, maybe then students would enjoy school more and feel a need or want to put in effort. There is also a major safety issue. There is a lot of room for improvement but there are a few good things, sometimes.
I have attended Palm Beach County Schools for thirteen years (kindergarten through high school) and I believe this county is generally very good. My elementary school, Sunrise Park Elementary, was wonderful; the staff and administration were hardworking and organized. My Middle School was nice too. While my high school, Olympic Heights High School, has offered me great opportunities and resources, the administration at the school is very poor. Funds were spent on golf carts for administrators rather than our broken and poorly functioning toilets and campus- at times throughout the years, there would only be two bathrooms (one girls and one boys) open for the 3,000 student population to use. Besides administrative issues like these, the teachers are great and extremely caring.
The first few years of my academic career was great. I met many hard working teachers who made it their goal to make their classroom feel safe, welcoming, and fun during our lectures. However, towards the end of my academic career, my school suffered from many threats; as well as fires/evacuations caused by students. I feel it is important to implement more mental health awareness for the students of Palm Beach County. A month of learning signs and symptoms of depression as well as how to deal with them will not benefit the students. Instead, monthly district funded school events will make students desire to go to school and join them to create closer connections with one another. Making an academic career fun would take away from a student's stress filled day and benefit them mentally. This can also be an opportunity for students to create connections within the real world, giving them a head start on their career choice and experience.
