We have been pleased with our son's experience at Onteora so far. There are only about 100 kids in each grade so it's the perfect size, not too big or small. Class sizes are very small so my son has always had plenty of personal attention. The majority of his teachers have been excellent and I was pleasantly surprised how well they got to know my son and understood his learning style and personality. There is an outstanding music program at Onteora and we love that his lessons are part of the school day. My son has a great friend group and gets along well with most of the kids, but there are definitely some there that aren't very nice. The buildings in this district could all use an upgrade, they are low brick buildings built 50's. The district has a huge budget so they should upgrade the buildings! Woodstock is very safe and walkable so my son likes to go there after school and hang out with his friends. It's been a wonderful place for him to grow up.
I enjoyed talking with teachers and staff and getting to know them. I do wish that the school put more effort into supporting their sports teams and well as keeping the facilities and equipment in decent condition. Academics are incredibly good, and we are known for scoring well on exams but that cannot be the only thing that the school cares about.
Onteora has a lot of things going for it. It is notable lacking in diversity, but the academics are excellent for those focused on it, and struggles to keep up with students who dont have as much of a drive. The teacher's are excellent, and the lunch is pretty good too.
