I've lived in Ocean Springs since my fourth grade year (2014), I am now a senior. Before living here I lived in Louisiana where I went to two other schools. Those schools weren't the best in my opinion. They were too strict for our age. In my first school they got rid of recess when I was in kindergarten, and my second school was really strict to the point that they didn't allow us to talk during lunch, and if we did we'd get written up. When I moved here I saw a very noticeable difference with the overall environment. Everyone was a lot happier, from the students to the teachers. I felt like I had a lot of opportunities that I previously didn't have. I later joined the band and started to push myself more academically, and for my years of High School I've taken only Honors and AP classes. I'm also in the AP Program. Overall a wonderful experience and a wonderful district.
There were SO many teachers that cared for the students, but I believe there were only a few in the general education courses. Higher level teachers, such as the AP teacher, put so much effort into their work. Alongside that, the school was unable to justify their actions and never took responsibility when something went wrong. For example, the senior class (2020) received ruined and broken yearbooks which also did not include items such as quotes, photos, or the senior page which costed $150-$300. I believe the school definitely needs improvement and I am shocked that they treated the class that brought them to the title “Best High School in Mississippi” so horribly.
Ocean Springs schools are great, once you get in them. You have to reregister each child every year, and if you miss the limited dates when new, your child WILL miss the first two days of school before they open the registration window again. It's quite frustrating.
