I am a graduate of Winnetonka High School. I also attended Maple Park Middle School and Gracemor Elementary school, all part of NKC Schools. I would rate my overall experience as good, but not exceptional. While I have not attended other schools, I’m sure that there are some nicer ones in terms of education. There was a mix of teachers that I encountered that were good and bad and everywhere in between. Some seemed like they put a lot of thought in their lesson plans and cared about the students, and some did not. The food was just ok, nothing spectacular. Some of the classes felt like they were easy, a little too easy. I feel that they should be geared more towards college level work, especially in the last 2 years of high school. Regardless, I always felt like I was in a safe environment with people who knew what to do in an emergency. Also, the schools seemed to be straight forward with things and honest as well.
Review North Kansas City School District
North Kansas City School district, is one of the most diverse school districts i had the pleasure to attend a school within. I learned a lot about other cultures and got to get out of my comfort zone when meeting people from different backgrounds. The teachers can be very careful not to be offensive to kids of a different race. I liked feeling safe when it came to knowing i wouldnt be harassed for the color of my skin. I hope the school district continues to make improvements such as more college advice and resources. I wish tutoring was more accessible and free to all students. Sports was a very popular thing to show school pride, but i wish we focused more on all the sports teams instead of the football and soccer team. I wish kids who werent in honor classes were able to voice their opinions more freely and openly.
The thing I dislike the most about the North Kansas City School District is that schools, at least mine (I obviously can't speak for all of them), only tend to focus on one or two activities. In my schools case only football and choir is talked about. The most outrageous case of this is that clubs like French club and activities like Speech and Debate go relatively unknown. In fact until this year they weren't even mentioned, not even over the intercom or through other announcement methods. I also don't like how they rarely give students snow days or late starts, even if it is super cold in the morning. Furthermore, they only seem to base snow days on what the weather will be like when the elementary and middle schoolers start and end their school day. What about high schoolers? Us high schoolers have buses that are farther apart meaning we stand in the cold for the longest amount of time during the coldest time of the day, before sun rise.
