I am a current high school sophomore in the Newport News City Public Schools System. I moved to Newport News in 2019 right before the pandemic hit. I was in 7th grade at the time. One thing I can say about the Newport News School System is that it is what you make it... I would say that you can find some great staff who are willing to help your child! But it is rare, some of the teachers are hardly professional, and usually, the administrative staff is awful. But if your child is gifted they may be able to thrive!! There are some teachers who truly care about their students! Though I would suggest Gloucester City Public Schools and York County if you are looking for the best opportunities for your child as they are skim in Newport News.
I've been in NNPS for the majority of my life, and for the most part, I see minor things that can be changed. Apart from funding towards renovating and fixing older school buildings, providing more opportunities with volunteering in school would be nice. Though there are many places around Newport News to volunteer, some students may not have the time, even if they wanted to. Volunteer opportunities during or after school (2pm -5pm) will give students more leeway and time to pursue aiding the community. Also, furthering programs that promote eco-friendly life styles like gardening and fundraising for world problems (like UNICEF) can help students connect with more than just within their communit.
Newport News' schools are not corrupt, are for the most part easy to work with, and there is an active effort being made to make student's lives better. That's more than a lot of school systems can say! But, schools are somewhat underfunded, many teachers are actively looking for other opportunities, and there is a vast diversity in quality depending on the school you attend. Your experience will be better if you have a dedicated student who wants to apply to magnet programs or if you live within zoning for a better school. Some schools have safety issues, but a lot of effort is being put into changing that. While no school is perfect and you might run into some minor issues, no high school or elementary school has a real bullying issue. There are no good middle schools, even the uniform middle schools don't take student concerns seriously and are disorganized. Overall, I'm not upset with my school experience here.
