In high school, my teachers let me interview guest speakers because they said I was a great speaker. In middle school, I was awarded the Kathren Miller award because my teachers noticed I understood the importance of being kind. Most importantly, in middle school, my math and social studies teachers entered me and a group of my peers into a quiz bowl. We won two years in a row. I love the teachers at the schools I attended in New Hanover County!
Great school with great teachers, everyone is there to help. We have survived from winter storms that closed us down for weeks, hurricanes that flooded our neighborhoods, to covid that moved us to virtual learning. As a county and a school we have prevailed. Teachers and students alike have and will go above and beyond to help each other. I can't imagine growing up or going to school anywhere else. It is a community I can see myself returning to after my college years are over. Definitely a great place to raise a family.
My school district was alright I suppose. Most of my teachers were nice and respected me because I rarely misbehaved and always tried my best. Bullying was never a major issue, and I always felt like I was safe from physical harm or violence on campus. HOWEVER, the system was not perfect. The hallways and most of my classes were overcrowded and chaotic. Teachers would sometimes need to yell at the class, especially in middle school. The school environment wasn't exactly nurturing, either; while administrators frequently cracked down on minor issues like tardiness and skipping, the discipline itself was poorly executed. I was never in ISS at high school but some friends who were testify that they just mainly slept, suggesting that the admin seemed to care more about their paycheck than their schools. The routine was also monotonous and the food wasn't great; I always brought lunch from home. Fights, while infrequent, happened periodically. Overall, my K-12 education was just okay.
