My family has had a positive experience at the New Hanover County Schools. I have two daughters in high school and they have attended schools in this county their entire lives. Our interactions have been positive for the most part. If I could go back and change anything, it would be 2020! That was a tough year for all of us. My daughters fared better that many because they seemed to be organized and focused. Sadly, many students did not respond well to online learning. I think our county did the best they could under the circumstances, but we should be using this time to train our teachers more thoroughly on online teaching in case another crisis arises in the future. I am happy to live in New Hanover County and very satisfied with our educational system.
In my educational experience, I have met some wonderful teachers who have made learning amazing. New Hanover County Schools seems to find some of the nicest teachers out there. I've experienced some really great staff too at New Hanover high school. For example, my Lyceum teachers have helped me start preparing for college way ahead of anyone else, allowing me to have a head start in the college application game.
Additionally, New Hanover County Schools has offered so many different AP courses for me to take, allowing me to further my education in courses like Chemistry and Art, which I plan on majoring in.
Despite this, there have been instances of the schools not taking care of problems such as bullying or the environment in general. Just last year there was an unfortunate event at the school I go to which could have been entirely avoided if the support team took some action.

I moved from Baltimore about seven years ago. I'm an African American woman and my child was mistreated and experienced racism here especially in the Porters Neck Elementary school. Her experience has been alot better so far at Snipes Elementary this year but because the school has less funding we have experienced transportation issues. The system here is very corrupted in my opinion. They don't care about the kids only about their own funding and pockets. My oldest daughter because she has an IEP her experience has been better in middle school. She has a great teacher and transportation don't put her in unsafe conditions due to her IEP. I have a son going to high school and the options here is horriable. Due to the systematic racism we are looking into Raleigh to move, we have been encouraged by friends and family that our quality of life would improve once we leave here this is our final year. Diversity is a serious issue here whomever gave the A- rating is obviously lying.
