Mt. Vernon High School is one of the best schools in Hancock County and I feel as though it is often underrated. Most students who attend Mt. Vernon have very good grades and are involved in some sort of extracurricular. There are many programs our school has to offer which cater to individual student needs such as successful sports teams, a variety of clubs, career prep opportunities, and an incredible music program. I personally think there is something for everyone at Mt. Vernon During Covid, they did their best to keep students safe. At Mt. Vernon High School, safety is a priority with monthly drills such as active shooter, fire, and tornado. The campus is heavily protected by local police and video surveillance systems. The school lunch isn't complete trash most days and I personally get a salad everyday. I highly recommend this school because of how involved students are, the staff, and the safety features that make Mt. Vernon stand out from other public schools in Indiana.
My experience over my lifetime of education at Mt. Vernon has been surprisingly wonderful! There are many good teachers who have years of experience and wish to see their students exceed, and this is especially true in honors and AP classes. The broader Mt. Vernon community is fairly limited in scope, reaching only to northwest Hancock County and areas around it. Despite being in the middle of cornfield country, Mt. Vernon is good at teaching kids who are willing to learn, and it has numerous clubs, athletics, and other activities for students to get involved in. My twelve years at MV were great!
The good things about Mt Vernon are the community, at least for the high school. Teachers and staff alike seem to care deeply about the school district itself. The bad however does make itself prevalent the farther you go up. The administration for the district is terrible at handling challenges and direction for the school. They are letting so many out-of-district students in that some classes have to be taught in trailers, and this is while construction is happening across the district. Overall I feel as if the district itself deserves better.
