I like that my school was very diverse, from race to sexuality. I went to a language school and we'd have festivals to celebrate our cultures. The music was amazing. We got to decorate the school halls, each wing was a different culture and food was even better because it was made by students and teachers from different backgrounds. Now that I'm out of school taking a gap year as an Americore member with City Year Milwaukee I get to work in MPS schools and see the different cultures and activities in our schools. I learned that colleges give scholarships to students for video gaming ( Rocket League) and they have after school programs to teach the students how to play. I also love that we have externals come in and help us figure out what we want to do in life after school and talk about how we can make our community better. In closing I am really looking forward to attending festival of nations!
I would say over all my experiences with the Milwaukee public school systems are below average. All starts with the positives. I feel that the Milwaukee public schools do have a lot of opportunities for students to go to college and to win scholarships and the opportunity to visit and find the right career for each individual student. They have after school programs and a lot of programs for low income, students. However, I feel that there is a lot of bias coming from the teachers and school board, administrators about certain values and morals that the student should carry on in life. I feel that school should be a place that is safe and unbiased and full of opportunity. I’ve been to multiple schools in Milwaukee and one thing that I do like is that they took the students backpacks and personal items before they enter the school to make it safer. They also implement yoga and breathing to encourage mindfulness.
During my four years of high school in Milwaukee Public School, it was definitely a new environment for me during my freshmen year as someone who just transferred from out of state. I was nervous but eventually got used to the environment although I never made much friends. I’d say it’s definitely less work compared to my old schools from where I came from. It definitely gave me the privilege to slack off more and develop bad habit because from how I see it, they aren’t that strict. The only time you really get in trouble is if you get into fights or arguments with your peers or teachers.
