McHenry Community High School District No. 156 Reviews
As a student, I really like the tight-knit community at McHenry. Most teachers are really invested in each of the students personally and care for their education. They build relationships that go beyond the curriculum in order to make sure the students are happy and having fun. Something I would like to change about the school is how the staff members help prepare students for college. It often feels like the school settles with students just going to community college instead of pushing them to go to more competitive schools. Also, during the entire college research process, it is hard to find immediate support from staff members like counselors and other office staff. This is frustrating because its hard to know where to start looking.
The teachers here are OUTSTANDING! they care a ton about their students. I have not seen one exception. They are willing to do what ever it takes to help their students succeed. Whether that be staying after school and working one on one with them, or simply shooting them a "check in" email, I've seen the teachers, staff, and administration go above and beyond to meet each person's individual needs. Overall, the entire school (including the student body), is very well run, and I, personally, feel very comfortable at my school and enjoy the time I spend here.
I generally enjoyed my experience. The thing that is frustrating is their utter lack of appreciation for the arts programs. The arts are thriving at McHenry High school, the band is going to play at Nationals this year, the Choir program has been invited to sing at Carnegie Hall for the 3rd time in the past 5 years, and the school gives them no recognition. They are still dead set on honoring the sports which flop year after year.
