I am a mother with three children in Mahopac public schools. I really cannot say enough good things about the experience. Elementary: Our children went to Fulmar Road. Fulmar is led by a caring and thoughtful principal who is incredibly open to ideas and feedback. The teachers are so supportive to all students. The before and after school programs are incredible. By age ten my daughter was an experienced coding in scratch. The Middle School is much bigger but is organized in a way that makes it feel smaller. The Science and Math teachers are world class. The English teachers are so positive and supportive focusing on developing a love for reading and an ability to express your thoughts clearly. I was worried about the high school years but have been pleasantly surprised. There’s something for everyone. I have one child applying to Ivy League Schools and other considering a vocational path. In my experience, the schools have been A+.
This school district has had many problems with racism and racial injustice. It is a mostly white town, and many of its students make racist jokes and say racial slurs openly in the halls with no repercussions. The administration pretends it doesn’t happen, or at least has no knowledge of it. In addition, our mascot is an “Indian” which is a racist symbol towards the Native American tribes that used to reside here. Multiple Native American groups in the area have asked the district to retire the mascot, but no change has been made. This is because many in the community believe it to be “honoring Native Americans” even though the school that claims to honor them teaches its students next to nothing about them. Most people I know cannot even name the tribe that used to reside here. In light of recent events, myself and others in my community have started protesting for change, but so far have been met with nothing but general blanket statements from our school district.
I personally believe that the school district has very good teachers. They try their best to have every student succeed. I also think that they offer an abundance of courses, especially at the middle and high school level that let students explore different topics that they are interested in. I personally believe that they should work on keeping the school cleaner, we have mice and every time it rains there are leaks in the roof so we have to put buckets down on the ground. I also think they should finance other sports as much as they finance football because for how much money we put into that team, there are much better sports teams in our school.
