The Lafayette Parish school system is unfortunately ruined because of the ridiculous politics brought in. On top of being tragically underfunded, ridiculous policies are enforced that overall do not improve students'morale. The individuals in charge do not understand the student's needs, and are horribly out of touch. There area few redeeming factors, like the school of choice program, which allows students to escape some of the horrible zone schools, that are ridiculously rundown and haven't been renovated in years.
Louisiana is notorious for its lack of funding towards education departments around the state-- and Lafayette Parish is no exception to this. I attend Lafayette High School, the biggest high school in the state. One would think attending the largest school in the state would mean having a large amount of funding, but this is far from true. The lack of funding has caused a deteriorating campus and lackluster educators. Despite the best efforts of wonderful Music & Art teachers, the parish has continued to de-fund the programs, causing an even further decline in the state-wide scores. It is not the fault of local educators for a poor national education ranking, but rather the state for being so ignorant on their student's education by funneling money into frivolous things other than what will make the nation's future leaders.
Great programs such as French immersion, talented and gifted. However, minimal recess time and teachers' curriculum is scripted to the minute. Very little time for socialization, which is fundamental to emotional development. Parents are encouraged to be involved, but the curriculum is unfamiliar and they are expected to teach at home. Teachers have very little resources and no autonomy as they cannot deviate from scripted lessons. Students have 10 minutes to eat lunch and cannot talk during lunch time. There are wonderful and talented teachers in the Lafayette Parish School System. However, they are overworked and are unable to utilize their skills effectively.
