Kirkwood High School has always been the high school I was to be enrolled into and im now in my junior year. Kirkwood defiantly takes a high ranking when it comes to academics and sports making it a great school, with that being said the school doesn't come without its faults. Diversity at Kirkwood defiantly lacks and the encouragement and safety for mental health and minorities (POC, LGBTQ+, disabled, etc) is almost sad to see. Some teachers are great and supporting and unfortunately some aren't so great. I hope going forward Kirkwood takes time to really celebrate the diversity that they have and go through some diversity training not only for race but for other differences as well. Most diversity training spotlights race and while that is a important issue, there are other diversity lessons that Kirkwood benefit from.
I really enjoyed my time in the district overall, even though I moved there as a freshman in high school. I think the administration overall does a decent job and is there to help students succeed. I also think we have excellent facilities and resources compared to many other places. Most of the study body is friendly and encouraging toward one another which is refreshing to see, yet it would be nice if the school/district had more diversity.
Kirkwood is a welcoming school district that challenges you academically as it has many choices for your career path. The majority of teachers I have met have been extremely encouraging and seem like they love their jobs as the put in much effort getting to know the kids. One thing Kirkwood is lacking, is the diversity among the students and teachers. As Saint Louis is a very segregated city, Kirkwood mirrors it. Kirkwood recognizes it and they have the ‘African American Award’ in February and they acknowledge black history month. But as a diverse school, one way this could be helped is if they maximized the diversity within the faculty.
