My experience with the Humble Independent School District was wonderful as a high school student. Compared to Houston ISD, the size comparisons are beyond different. Attending a smaller school district made my high school career easier;there was more funding towards the schools, teachers took their jobs seriously and not treated it as a daycare for young adults, the environment of the school district is diverse; Humble ISD has many great attributes and using 1000 characters isn’t enough to express my experience here. The district takes pride in their students wellbeing and the community’s as well. When covid occurred in 2020 the district gave out free meals to every student in their district and to their parents as well, each year there is a Christmas parade which allows each school to participate, and Humble ISD even allow the community and students too vote on how their students calendar should be, because of this students get a week off in October and February. This district CARES!
Humble Independent School District has been a very forward thinking district and has allocated funding over the years to improve school environments. The district has expanded elective courses across its middle schools and high schools. These programs offer unique opportunities for students to receive hands on instruction in a professional environment. Some of these programs that have improved through funding are criminal justice, computer science, culinary, agriculture, health science, and automotive repair classes. Humble has also adjusted the vacation dates for students and staff, by adding a week long break in October and February in addition to winter and spring break. The earlier start in the school year receives little complaint because of how useful these breaks are to everyone in the school district. Students and staff always have time off to look forward to in the near future. And with the overall familiarization to the new schedule, it does not seem to interrupt too much.
Every year I caught glimpses of new ideas and passions emerging from my peers. It was clear how truly involved the teachers were in each of their own specialties and how it impacted the students so positively. In 9th grade, my A/V Production teacher, Mr. Mack, made me feel fully encapsulated in the class. I was able to learn in an environment full of inspiration and involvement, as well as test my own capabilities as a filmmaker in a safe space. In 10th grade, my orchestra teachers, Mr. Catoe and Mr. Teniente, could not have been more encouraging. This was the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and everything became virtual, which was difficult on everyone. Orchestra became an escape for me thanks to these wonderful teachers. I always felt supported and encouraged in my musical pursuits and became the most confident I had ever been. Among many others, the teachers of AHS made my experience with the HISD what it became and I am very grateful to all of them.
