Rating 3.7 out of 5 162 reviews
Hamilton County is a great school district, but like most things, there is always room for improvement. Specifically for East Hamilton, the teachers were outstanding. Everyone genuinely cared about you and your education. The administration felt like they were on a power trip sometimes. As a student, the dress code was more of an issue than anything else. I was sent home due to a tear in my jeans (less than an inch) and missed my first class for the new semester that day. They also randomly pull students aside to search their bookbags, which seems drastic. EH also decided to eliminate all vending machines students had access to. This felt unfair as some days a vending machine was a student's only option. The punishments are personally extremely drastic and unfair for students.
The teachers and administration at Ooltewah are good and care about the students. The facilities are run down and need major repairs. The bathrooms are falling apart and the ceiling tiles are falling down in many places. They ended the International Baccalaureate program this year which is very disappointing, as Ooltewah was one of only two schools in Hamilton County that offered this high achieving program. The sports programs are good except the football team, which is the only team they put money in. We would have liked to have seen other sports consider priorities such as track and field, volleyball, cross county, lacrosse, and swimming. Especially women's sports because it is much harder for women to earn college sports scholarships than men. All in all our experience at Ooltewah was good and both our children received good educations and went on to college, and we are very thankful for that. Donnie Mullins will be the new principal next year and we think he will do a great job.
The district itself is pretty nice. Beautiful area to live in and experience a high school career in. However there are a lot of disciplinary issues within the schools. I do not believe the faculty and staff are doing enough within the schools to fully understand what each student is going through and some will not even try to help them because it is "too much work." They believe the way to help us is to provide courses to teach us how to "be better people and students" but that does not always help or do any justice. With all that said, my high school experience was not bad. It was just odd and I do not agree with how somethings were handled. The students were really cool and some of the teachers were really nice and helpful.
