The Hamilton County School District is just saddening. For starters we had the book ban movement affecting are schools libraries. The school board did not take into account when taking away books that most schools didn't have the books to begin with. Not that it would matter because a lot of kids in Hamilton county can't read well because the education here is subpar. Also they didn't listen to high school teachers in Hamilton county, for example many high school teacher said that moving to an A-B schedule would negatively impact students. The teachers where not listened to and an A-B schedule was put into place and has proved to be negative on students not only mentally and emotionally but also academically. On top of all this there was also an incident at East Ridge High School where a student was attacked by the SRO. Then rape “allegations” at Hixson high and the teenage girl who was assaulted was suspended by the school. Both situations were handled poorly.
I attended Central High School my freshman and sophomore years. While there I was introduced into all the worlds a student should not see. Its almost an impossible battle of trying to make decent friends and not give into any of the relentless pressure. The teachers there are great and very understanding; as it was during the pandemic they made sure the student body had many opportunities to catch up on work. I played basketball both years I was there; it was the best decision I made while attending. The coaches are amazing and taught me dozens of valued lessons on and off the court. Now I am a junior in the Polytech Academy at Chatt State. This program has taken all the negative pressures and temptations away and turned them into productive pressures, like college courses. They prepare me more than I could've ever hoped for with internship possibilities, act prep, college experience, and endless more. I had a lot of fun at Central but in no way do I regret the move.
Almost everything about SMMHS (specifically) is great....Except for one thing. The IB program. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's the UN sponsored version of the AP program. For most classes it's fine. But current affairs, taught in place of history, is completely biased, and as usual, presented to sound as though it is "fair and balanced". Whether by design or not, you'll be told your child can "opt out" of the program, but that is misleading at best. The entire curriculum and texts are IB, from MS through HS. The only thing you can opt out of are the more advanced classes. If you're ok with this, or like it, you'll love this school. If you're not ok with the ongoing indoctrination, do your best to ensure that your kid(s) is informed of the truth at home, and you're likely to be thrilled about almost everything else here. The staff is friendly, the coaches are involved, the grounds are well kept, and the choice (overall) of extracurricular classes is varied.
