Gretna Public Schools Reviews
I had some positive experiences attending Gretna Public Schools from elementary until I graduated from high school. Overall, however, I would not recommend this high school or the district and would not send my children there. No diversity. Everyone I attended school with was white, with the exception of one African American student (not in my graduating class). This goes for the administrators and teachers, as well. The vast majority of students had wealthy parents and privileged upbringings. “Yuppie” crowd. Administration, teachers, and students alike express Conservative views, with little to no tolerance of others. Implicit and explicit misogynistic attitudes prevail. Sexual assaults were common, to which the administration, teachers, and students blame victims. Speaking from my own experience, it does not prepare students well for life in the real world.
My experience at Gretna Public Schools has been great, I'm really happy with the education I have recieved. What have I liked about Gretna Public Schools? The teaching staff starting with my Kindergarten year to my Senior year I have had caring, smart teachers that have prepared me for college. What would I change? The grading policy to match other area schools. Its great having a higher standard of grading , but a standard scale would make the playing field even when applying for scholarships.
As a student at GPS, I learned enough, but that was it. Gretna is a great place to be an average student, but the opportunities for gifted students are not abundant. I worked hard in school, but was never pushed by the district to do more, which led to me attending a state school rather than a prestigious university. The lack of diversity also is a negative, as there are very few students with different life experiences. I don’t regret attending the school or my university, but I wouldn’t recommend Gretna if you want to push yourself harder than the average student.
