I joined the GCS District 2 years ago when I moved to South Carolina from Michigan. I was put into the virtual program due to the coronavirus and was very concerned and nervous about what that would mean for my schooling and success in high school however, my experience was amazing from the beginning. I had so many supportive and understanding teachers that made learning from home comfortable and easy. The students were all very welcoming and friendly and the classes were all set to the standard of pushing ourselves to be better and learn more just as an in-person school would. I have decided to stay in the GCSVP for 3 years and have loved coming back each time!
I'm a high school senior in Greenville county school district, while I've had a generally positive experience there could definitely be improvements. I'll begin with the positives: most staff tend to do their jobs well, caring about students education and success, and the recourses that have been allotted to me though this district have been amazing. Though there have been instances in which teachers and admin have been unresponsive within problems. This has lead to multiple instances in which I have personally experienced students being openly prejudiced within classrooms, bothering my peers and with no repercussions within admin. There have also been a steady stream of fights within schools, leading most students to become desensitized to them. I will give credit where credit is due however, I have had great experiences with my peers through clubs, events, and other school hosted events. Overall, this district has been alright, not perfect nor terrible, just generally okay.
Greenville County School District is quite large. As such, the quality of education is highly variable across the County, making it difficult to rate the District as a whole. The District has exceptional schools, but others which are abysmal. Its schools' performance, quality, safety, and atmosphere run the gamut.
If you have school-aged children, I highly recommend researching the schools extensively and selecting where you choose to live carefully. Greenville County Schools offer school choice, but it is lottery based. Unless you are zoned for a particular school, there is no guarantee that you can choose to have your child attend a school in a different area.
Greenville County School District was tragically the site of a school shooting in 2022 where one 12-year-old murdered another on campus during the school day. Greenville is growing rapidly that it is difficult for the school system to keep up.
