Great Valley high school is located in the suburb of Philadelphia. This means that it is a predominantly white school. Due to this staff lacks in diversity which causes ignorance. For example, in the 9th grade I chose to take the AP Human Geography course offered here. This is taught by a white man. So eventually toward the end of the year, we were learning about the caste system of India. Which is where I am from. He began discussing India and Indian culture in general. Keep in mind he is a white man in a classroom of predominantly asian people. He asked us for our experiences then proceeded to speak over the people who experience real Indian culture, saying that he, as a white man, is ‘more educated’ then those who experience Indian culture on a daily basis.
This school has a lot of bullying going on that is seen and known by the staff. Yet nothing is done to help prevent any of it. There are mass amounts of students walking around with drugs on them consistently.
Overall, my experience at Great Valley was smooth and exciting. I met some of my best friends and had the opportunity of working with highly educated teachers. Throughout my years at Great Valley, I learned how to work efficiently and be organized. One of my favorite things about the high school were the English classes. The English teachers really do prepare you for college when it comes to writing. So far I have received great words from my college professors on my writing skills. Socially, it is quite a diverse place that has a variety of opportunities such as sports and clubs to make sure that each student is a part of the school community.
